Barely 150 kilometer
away from Kathmandu, in the dense jungles
of Nepal's flatlands is Chitwan, a popular
nature sanctuary famous for its national
park. Chitwan National Park is one of
Asia's finest parks. In the nineteenth
century the area was a famous hunting
reserve that attracted royalties from
Kathmandu and the British Raj in India.
Today the 1,000 sq. km park is one of
the best habitats for one horned Asiatic
rhino, elephants, royal Bengal tigers,
gharials and hundreds of species of exotic
birds.
Dozens of hotels, resorts
and tented camps have sprouted inside
and outside the park. They offer something
for everyone. Wildlife safaris, bird watching,
jungle walk, or drive, and canoeing trips
and some of the activities that are on
offer for the adventurous minded and nature
loving visitors. For the culturally curious
the local Tharu community which is predominant
in the area, also put on cultural displays.
There are hotels, resorts everywhere in
and around the park and to suit all pockets.
The park attracts hundreds of thousands
visitors from around the world every year.
