At 5,160 m, on the way to Everest Base Camp, past the colourful Sherpa villages of Pheriche, Dugla and Lobuje, the Gorak Shep area and famous peak of Kalapatthar (Black Rock, which is true to its name) offers arguably the best view of Everest. Trekkers who have ample time and energy make it a point to make a side trip to Kalapatthar. Acclimatization is very important while ascending Gorak Shep and Kalapatthar, which is not so far from the base camp.
