Kathmandu Durbar Square

Perhaps the best to begin your sightseeing of Kathmandu Valley is the Kathmandu Durbar Square. As you cross from the modern shopping area of New Road into the Hanuman Dhoka complex, you suddenly come face to face with Kathmandu's famed medieval architecture. This is the Kathmandu of the old, from where Kings used to rule

Historians say the Hanuman Dhoka complex was founded late in the rule of the Licchavi dynasty but it was during the Malla era that much of the construction took place. Surrounding this ancient place are temples and monuments also built during the Malla era and carried on by the Shah dynasty, all of which deserve more than just a glance.

Hanuman Dhoka (literally, Hanuman Gate) takes its name from the monkey god Hanuman, whose idol lies at the entrance of the palace. Immediately inside is the biggest of the Hanuman Dhoka Palace's chowk (courtyards), Nasal Chowk, where the King's coronation takes place.

Near the Hanuman Dhoka Palace is Kumari Bahal, the house of the Kumari, Nepal's Living Goddess. Visitors may enter the courtyard to see the Kumari, but are forbidden to take photographs. Generally, tourists can catch a glimpse of the Kumari at the window.

West of the Kumari Bahal lies a large wooden temple known as Kashtamandap, literally a temple of wood. It is said that Kathmandu got its name from this temple built, as the low has it, from a single gigantic stump of ancient wood.
