Near
the Hanuman Dhoka Palace is Kumari Bahal,
the house of the Kumari, Nepal's Living
Goddess. Visitors may enter the courtyard
to see the Kumari, but are forbidden
to take photographs. Generally, tourists
can catch a glimpse of the Kumari at
the window.
West of the Kumari Bahal lies a large
wooden temple known as Kashtamandap,
literally a temple of wood. It is said
that Kathmandu got its name from this
temple built, as the low has it, from
a single gigantic stump of ancient wood.
