Kathmandu

A Nepali lore has it that whenever the gods and goddesses wanted to play, they descended upon Kathmandu. This valley in the clouds used to be a heavenly playground long before it became inhabited by more mortals.

A stroll around the ancient sheets and alleys of the Nepali capital brings this lore to life. For here you will find numerous temples and monuments dedicated to Hindu deities, jostling for attention with the magnificent Buddhist stupas alongside. They stand in all their glory, still the center of religious and cultural activity of the peoples of Kathmandu. They are above all, a testimony to the harmonious coexistence and cultures.

Part of the reason is Kathmandu's location. The Nepal capital straddles both the HImalayas and the southern plains. It has therefore played an important role as a major commercial hub for trade between the high Tibetan plateau and the vast Indian plains. And where commerce travels, religion and culture is not far behind.

But temples and monuments are just one facet of modern day Kathmandu life. Originally inhabited by indigenous Neware, the valley today is a microcosm of Nepal itself where almost all the religious and ethnic groups of this diverse kingdom have found space and expression and this fusion has continues in modern times, as Eastern mysticism and Western modernism meet and complement each other in the alleys and by lanes of Basantapur and Thamel. You have to be here to experience it.
