Lumbini is that holy place where Lord
Siddartha Gautam was born more then
2,500 years ago, in 566 BC. It is situated
about 250 kilometer west of Kathmandu
near the Nepal-India border. Lumbini
is famous for its stone pillar of Ashoka,
an Indian emperor, the Lumbini gardens,
and a number of monasteries representing
different Buddhist countries.
Its solemn and tranquil
atmosphere is also a perfect setting for
mediation. The famous pillar of Lumbini
was raised by king Ashoka in 249 BC. And
construction of Maya Devi temple and other
beautification projects are set to begin
in the holy place. The discovery of contemporary
relics of Maurya, Sunga and Kusan dynasties
around Mayadevi temple, indicates that
Lumbini has been a famous pilgrimage site
for centuries.
Several excavations
including the one sponsored by the UNESCO
have proved the Tilaurakot area of Kapilvastu
as the actual birthplace of Gautam Buddha,
the apostle of world peace. Various hotels,
resorts and restaurants have come up in
the area to cater to pilgrims and tourists
from around the world swarm the sacred
place all the year round, adding to the
different hue and colors of the area.
Nearby, there is a
bird sanctuary dedicated to the conservation
of different endangered species of birds
and chiefly the saras cranes just like
the one treated by Siddartha Gautam two
and a half centuries ago. Other natural
sites in the area include wetlands and
bushes that are famous for birds and different
species of wildlife.
