Nestled in the lap of the majestic Annapurna range, the picturesque town of Pokhara shimmers in the light reflected from the lakes that gives the town its name. Barely 200 Kilometer from Kathmandu, Pokhara got its name from the abundance of water everywhere, in lakes and the rivers snaking down from he Annapurnas. Famous lakes in the and around the lake city include the Fewa, Rupa and Begnas lakes.

The milky white Seti River flows southwards from a deep gorge in in the heart of the city. More than anything else, the town is famous for the spectacular views of the Himalayan range of the Annapurnas and Machhapuchhre, which can also be viewed as a stunning reflection on the surface of Lake Fewa. The lake also has a temple in the middle of it and visitors and pilgrims alike find a boat ride to the Barahi temple an the surrounding area quite refreshing.

The town, considered as the gateway to the Annapurna Region and Mustang, is accessible by road and flight. And the popular resort town is also the best place to start various adventure and leisure activities, which may include trekking, mountaineering and rafting expeditions. Ultra light aircraft as the airport operate 15 minute paragliding flights. And there are plenty of facilities opened for the service of visitors. While the town is inhabited by representatives of almost every ethnic community of Nepal, the surrounding areas are home to Gurungs, Magars, Thakali, Manangs and other ethnic groups. The Gurungs and Magars have gained considerable fame worldwide as the fearsome Gurkha fighters.

Mahendra Cave

 
 
The famous Mahendra Gufa (cave), named after Late King Mahendra just like the bridge spanning the Koshi River in the down town area, is situated on the northern end of the town of Pokhara on the foothills. The cave is well lit with electric lights and has some stalactite as well as stalagmite rocks, Nearby. There is the 'Bat Cave'. Which lies about 10 minutes' walk away from Mahendra Cave. It is truly the home of bats which is apparent with thousands hanging from the ceiling of the cave. Getting here is quite easy from the town.
 
     
Sarangkot    
At 1,592 meters, Sarangkot is arguably the best excursion site, or short trekking destination, near Pokhara. From the mountain top visitors can have a bird's eye view of Fewa Lake, Pokhara city and silver shining Annapurnas and Machhapuchhre. The pleasant walk up the mountain via Bindabasini temple of Bhairab Tol can be the best leg-stretcher before preparing for a longer trek. It takes about two hours to get there. A motorcycle or mountain bike ride can shorten the time limit.
 
     
Lakeside    
The area lies in the western part of Pokhara. Spread along the banks of Fewa Lake, the are is famous for its cheap and expensive hotels, lodges and resorts, restaurants, cafe and virtually every facility that an overseas or local tourist might look for. The are also offers some nightlife at the many bars and pubs that have come up in recent years. Along the main road, there are many interesting things to see such as temples and road side curio shops and tourist facilities to cater the needs of visitors of different income brackets.

Rupa, Begnas Lakes

The twin lakes are situated in a quiet township. 15 kilometer east of the bustling town on the Pokhara-Kathmandu highway. These two lakes are the second and the third largest lakes after Fewa Lake in Pokhara valley. A trip to this area could be the most ideal for the ones looking for far from the maddening crowd type experience.

 
A green mountain-ridge, where visitors can walk and relax, separates these lakes. The are has a number of hotels, resort and restaurants that cater to various types of travelers. And it is open for various other outdoor and leisure activities such as trekking, boating. The quiet area is also suitable for bird watching.
