Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trekking is a beautiful trekking route Nepal has to offer.  Trekking trail passes through different Gurung and Magar villages, forests of bamboo and rhododendron, and glaciers.  This trekking trail offers beautiful view of different mountains like Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Fishtail, Mt. Gangapurna, and many more.  This base camp trekking is also known as Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking.  Trekking starts from beautiful city of lake Pokhara (800 m).  The highest altitude of this trekking is Annapurna Base Camp itself, which is (4,130 m).

Depending on your fitness level, this trek may take 7 to 10 days to and from Pokhara.  One should not hurry to hike up quickly.  Acclimatization is a must during all trekking.  Keep this thing in a mind to complete your trek.  Other than altitude sickness, trekking in this region is pretty easy and relaxing.

Best Season to Trek Annapurna Base Camp

March to May and September to November is the best season to trek in this region.  During this season, the weather is clear and forests are full of different kinds of flora.  Beside these seasons, other season is not considered suitable to trek, but trekking in off season may be cheap than trekking in peak season.  So if you have tight budget, one may consider these season to trek.

Journey to Annapurna Base Camp

Trip starts from Kathmandu.  From Kathmandu, we will take a bus or fly to Pokhara.  By bus, it will take about 7-8 hours to reach Pokhara whereas flying to Pokhara will take 30 minutes.  We will spend our free time there is Pokhara that day.  Next day, we will drive up to reach Nayapul.  In an hour, we will reach Nayapul.  From there, we will start our trek to reach Tikhedhunga.  You may need to show your TIMS card and permit to the check point.  After completing this formality, we further continue to trek to reach Jhinu Danda.  There we will rest and take a dip in a natural hot spring to relax our tired body.

Next day, we will trek to reach Dovan.  Slight uphill as well as downhill trail will lead you to reach Dovan.  Few hours of walking through dense rhododendron forest and bank of Chhomrung Khola, we will reach Dovan where we stay overnight at a lodge.  Next day, after breakfast, we continue our trek to reach Macchapuchre Base Camp, final stop before reaching Annapurna Base Camp.  After few hours of walking, we will reach Macchapuchre BC.  We will stay there for acclimatization for a day and prepare for next day to reach ABC.

After breakfast, we trek further to reach ABC.  It will take about 3-4 hours to reach ABC.  During the peak season, this trail is crowded with fellow trekkers.  After spending few time there, we then return back to reach Dovan via Macchapuchre Base Camp.  Next stop from Dovan is Chhomrung via Bamboo.  Trail follows through dense rhododendron and bamboo forest.  Few hours of walking, you will reach Chhomrung.  Trails are both downhill as well as uphill.  We will rest for a night here at Chhomrung.

Next day, we will trek to reach Ghandruk, a beautiful Gurung village.  Prayer flags, chortens, monasteries, mani walls is the main attraction of this trail.  You will be welcomed by Gurung culture upon reaching Ghandruk.  Next day, we continue to trek to reach Pokhara.  Trail is mostly downhill with few tea houses along the trail.  You can take a break for snacks in these tea houses.  After few hours, we will reach Birethati and from there, we drive to reach Pokhara.

The other route you can take is from Ghorepani and Poon Hill, but it will add extra days to your trek. This route is also worth to take for Annapurna Base Camp trekking.  Depending upon your time availability you can choose any options.
